  • to an auspicious year! 2 0 1 2

while standing in line during the holidays at cost plus world market, i was running down the list of my to-do’s while trying recount 2011 as a whole. very odd the things that come to mind at any given moment while doing any given task.

2011 was a year with many highs and remarkable markers for me in all respects as a woman, small business owner, musician, girlfriend, daughter, sister, friend, aunt and much much more. and as i was juggling the gifts in my hands, my phone and purse i looked over and saw these brightly packaged fortune cookies. i was so drawn to the color, but i think more than anything, i started thinking about how 2012 felt like an even bigger year to come. so, after adding yet another item to my list, i thought about what i’d say to you all—anyone who may read this blog or follow me on social networks for nice owl design studio.

may your new year’s fortune be bright.”

the colors brought a huge smile to my face and the thought of 2012 being an even more stellar year than the one before got me even more excited.

nice owl design studio has so much in store for their past, present and future clients. operating as a one-person company has taught me an incredible amount, for which i am so thankful for. please stay tuned and tell a friend about us if they’re shopping around for special occasion, wedding, baby, bridal or personal paper goods.

  • always being inspired by design*sponge

many years ago as i was starting out as a small business owner i got into the habit of following many blogs that helped inspire me and showed me how people ‘just like me’ we’re making their hobbies and passions a sustainable lifestyle.

on the top of my list was (and still is) design*sponge. grace bonney has recently published her first book and i was able to attend the book signing at anthropologie in san francisco last week. thank you, grace! here are a few snaps i took while at the event…

the bridge: anthropologie is so amazing for their art installations in all their store. here is the golden gate bridge with rice-a-roni boxes!

snapshots a la diptic (clockwise): guests sipping on libations from the bar; grace bonney seated around her books whilst signing each for her fans; and an edible photo backdrop of sugar cookies from colors inspired by the book.

shredder: a great chicken wire display with shreds of maps!

snapshots a la diptic (clockwise): rice-a-roni bridge; design*sponge books; photobooth instructions; and a retro coleman with pellegrinos.

congratulations d*s…to many more ventures and success!!

  • CULTURE |::| Water & Bodies Film Shoot

    youngandfictitious:

MSK and Josh Stohl went to a living-room performance by Portland group Water & Bodies at Green Luck Media. Friends and strangers mingled between beers and mimosas while the crew prepared for filming.

The band plans to release the video in sections through YouTube, and sell it on iTunes in October along with a small DVD pressing available on tour. Check them out on September 11th at the Doug Fir.

It all started with a Tweet from Willamette Week. A few days later Josh and I were standing outside Kelly’s Olympian on SW 4th and Washington trying to figure out where the Green Luck Media studio was. By time we found our way to the second floor studio the room was full of interesting people, cameras and equipment. The room smelled and looked like a summer basement.

Some dude came up to me with a smile and a beer and said, “Welcome!”

We talked for a couple minutes before he asked how I found out about it, and then i asked him the same thing.

“Well, I’m in the band,” Singer Christopher Ruff said

  • i came across dana tanamachi’s web site and fell in love with her art and time-lapsed videos of her art. i’ve always admired hand-drawn signs—chalk, brightly colored acrylic pens, pencil, etc—and these really made me fall in love s’more.

  • two very good friends of mine are getting married this august and i have the honor of being part of the bridal entourage as a bridesmaid. it is a true testament of what great friends and partners each are, alex and eman are each others best friends which carries through in how they’ve bonded so many different friendships around them.
when it was time to plan their co-ed bridal shower both the bridesmaids and groomsmen got together and had a fantastic brainstorming session. themes were selected, committees were aligned and a party was born.
the wedding, as a whole, has a navy blue and fuchsia color palette with an “everything-is-round” theme. please see images with accompanying captions.
a) streamers were hung straight down and carefully mixed along a loft hallway.
b) round fabric circles were cut and sewn across to create another streaming element to hang and display more color. make sure to alternate the colors.
c) white pom-poms were made and hung up around the backyard with the fabric circles hung across them.
d) more streamers and fabric circles hung along the staircase banister.
e, f, g) an eco-friendly take on the “toilet paper bridal gown design game!” i have always felt so guilty using rolls of toilet paper for a game that lasts about 8-10 minutes. so, instead of using that precious tushy paper, we had family members save newspapers (meant to be recycled after a read) up until the party.
each group was given equal stacks of newspapers and 1 roll of packing tape. the outcome was very pleasing as the paper was easy to mold, cut, shape and get extra creative with. the guests enjoyed it and the co-ed minds came up with very interesting designs!

  • coordinating your wedding day-of components to have a cohesive theme and feel is yet another personal touch you can add to your special day. there are so many different ways to do this, in so many different fashions.

a past couple i worked with hosted a very small and intimate wedding with a little more than 100 guests. one way to display the seating chart, which would be much easier for a small guest list, was grouping table guests in lists. the 18 x 24” frame was propped on an easel in the dining room. the table tent cards, which stand on their own, had the table number on one side and the menu on the other. there were shared appetizers, main entrees and desserts listed for the guests to read over.

    how fun is that!

    hellolaurendrew:

    My muse.

NYC… Summer of 2000. My best summer ever. There are way too many reasons to mention, so I’m only going to share two.

One. Running around and discovering NYC with Helena. *Sigh* Our lives were so simple back then. Our only ambitions were to find the best places to eat, to find the best places for music, hanging out on stoops, hanging out on rooftops, and finding more places to eat. I can’t speak for Helena, but I was at my prime. I had a jobby job. I was dating a few girls. I was fit. I had a hairline… that’s right, a hair line. If I ever had game, this was my “A” game son!

Before Helena, I would usually only venture into the city at night to either stuff my face with honey walnut shrimp and salt&pepper pork chop from HopKee. Or tear up isht with Debbie, Christina, Mikey, and Ant all over town. But after Helena and I started hanging out, I found myself spending more time in the city during the day, doing things that didn’t necessarily result in hangovers. That’s when I really fell in love with the city. Not only did I discover the city, most importantly I discovered a new part of myself.

What I mean by that was, I was focused on the wrong areas of my life, and the experience of discovering the city and myself allowed me to open my eyes. Which brings me to my best reason for loving NYC Summer 2000… it’s the summer I met your mother. More on that later.

Helena introduced me to Getz & Gilberto that same summer. It will forever remind me of her.

    Happy Birthday Helena, love always.

    You and Ninang Helena
